Do you want an agile team? Then you need Jira

Picture this: your team is in the middle of delivering a critical project. There are a thousand tasks floating around in different chats, a bug that no one knows who should fix and a lost document that, according to everyone, should be where it needs to be. Total chaos . Now, imagine that there is a tool that can bring order to all that: it assigns tasks automatically; it tells you, with data in hand, when you are going to finish, and it is able to find the document with just one application. Well, that tool exists, and it’s called Jira.

What is Jira and why do all high-performing teams use it?

Jira is a project management and task tracking platform created by Atlassian. What makes it different is that it’s not just a to-do list to be crossed off, no, Jira is an intelligent system that helps teams organize better, solve problems quickly, and work with agile methodologies like Scrum or Kanban.

Whether your team is in software development, marketing, or technical support, Jira adapts and scales according to your needs. And the best part: it does so without complications.

What is Jira for, and what does it do so well?

Atlassian’s Jira is like the conductor of your team. Among its main functions are:

  • Organize tasks and projects with visual dashboards that show what’s in progress, what’s stuck, and what’s been completed.
  • Track incidents and bugs without them getting lost in chats or emails.
  • Automate workflows, eliminating repetitive tasks and ensuring that each team member receives the right information at the right time.
  • Generate reports and metrics to make informed decisions and improve team efficiency.
  • Integrate with key tools like Confluence, Slack, Bitbucket, and hundreds of other apps.

But what are its benefits?

Easy.

  • Your team gains clarity: Everyone knows what they should do, when and how.
  • Fewer unnecessary meetings: Work speaks for itself with dashboards and reports updated in real-time.
  • Scale with your business: From startups to global corporations, Jira can always grow with you.
  • Support for agile methodologies: Perfect for Scrum, Kanban, or any custom workflow.

AWS Region in Mexico: the cloud is now tricolor

It’s official: the AWS cloud is painted in tricolor with its new region in Mexico.

What does this news mean for Mexican companies?

Starting in 2025, innovation will accelerate with the opening of the AWS region in Mexico, breaking historical paradigms in technology and digital transformation, since, in a country known for its strict regulations in the financial sector – where banks, insurers and fintechs must guarantee the residency of productive data – this new region eliminates barriers that previously limited digital transformation.

Now, however, the transformation will have no limits.

What changes with the AWS Region in Mexico?

Previously, many companies faced operational challenges by relying on regions in other countries, making it difficult to quickly implement solutions such as:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI.
  • Data analytics.
  • Cloud migrations.
  • Disaster Recovery (DRP).
  • Scalable application development.

Now, Mexican companies will be able to adopt these technologies without regulatory restrictions, achieving:

  • Better experiences for your customers through faster, more efficient apps.
  • Development of innovative solutions in key sectors such as finance.
  • Competitive advantage by complying with data residency regulations.
  • Assurance that data grows and develops in Mexico

A paradigm shift

Previously, many companies preferred to keep their data, applications, and services hosted on-premises, but relied on on-premise infrastructures that limited their ability to innovate. With this region, that paradigm is broken to detonate:

  • The accelerated growth of Mexican companies.
  • The development of scalable infrastructures to reach more customers.
  • Improving experiences across all industries.
  • The exponential digital transformation in Mexico.

Significant impacts in Mexico and LATAM

The opening of this region also benefits all of Latin America, since, by reducing latency, companies that previously depended on regions such as Virginia will now be able to process requests faster from Querétaro, improving the performance of applications and services in real time.

In addition, the AWS region in Mexico is 100% built and operated by AWS, without outsourcing maintenance, administration or management activities. This ensures the security, performance, and reliability that businesses need for their operations.

Mexico as a global technology hub

With this move, AWS puts Mexico on high, as this region reinforces AWS’s confidence in our country while positioning it as a key player in global technology. Not only because of the investment and the sources of employment it will generate, but also because this launch shows the impact that Mexican companies have on the global arena and reaffirms the importance of international investments in our territory.

With the AWS region in Mexico, the possibilities for digital transformation are endless. The question is no longer “why move to the cloud?”, but “how far can we go from here?”. The future begins now.

Migrating from VMware to AWS Native: Getting Started

When considering migrating workloads that are currently on VMware virtual servers, it’s very important that you make the decision with the right data.

To do this, it is necessary to carry out a detailed analysis that not only covers a sizing of the infrastructure, but also considers the following aspects:

  • Different pricing model when considering cloud uploads.
  • Prioritize that you are not migrating servers, but applications.
  • How we impact the business areas that depend on infrastructure.
  • The connectivity of services and network aspects.
  • Consider how IT teams will work.
  • Be able to determine an architecture that supports the cloud schema.
  • Assess the knowledge requirements and profiles of IT staff.
  • An architecture that allows you to continue growing in the cloud.
  • A cloud governance that allows for correct strategy guidelines.
  • Supported security according to workloads.

In VMware infrastructures, everything is managed based on nodes with a certain storage capacity, with a complex structure that does not align with current business needs, for example:

  • Elasticity
  • Scalability
  • Rightsizing

In addition, you pay for Windows licensing for each virtual machine that is provisioned. In the cloud, that structure changes, since when you move it to native, they are AWS instances with total freedom. In this sense, it is possible to have schemes that experience the advantages mentioned above, going further with models that register greater efficiency than:

  • Leave costly licensing behind.
  • Have highly resilient serverless applications.

Derived from the importance of having an architecture of excellence in innovation, cost and efficiency, the AWS cloud has the Migration Acceleration Program, which includes a series of stages that allow you to design a successful migration strategy by reviewing every detail.

Identify Strategic Dependencies

It is part of the assessment that integrates the first stage and consists of knowing how some servers relate to each other. That is, an application can exist on one or more servers and, additionally, an application can be connected to others, to one or more databases and, in turn, it is possible that that application is used by one or more processes.

It is important to identify how they relate to each other, because when migrating we must be clear about it to define priorities and establish a path to the cloud that is feasible and scalable.

To do this, it is possible to have third-party tools such as Cloudamize, a tool that is installed in the current environment and that allows not only to analyze dependencies, but also to identify them.

In the same way, it makes it possible to discover another important point: when we have an on-premise infrastructure, as it is not scalable, we have servers with a certain CPU and RAM capacity that is not necessarily what our applications use. It may be that it is exceeded and, for example, it only reaches the limit at certain peaks in demand. Cloudamize also provides recommendations for the right size and type of instances, taking advantage of the scalability of the cloud.

With consulting services that are carried out in this assessment, third-party tools that we use for access to applications, security and monitoring are also visualized, because these must also be migrated to the cloud.

Cloud Environment Cost Forecasting

In the assessment stage, Cloud Economics schemes are also delivered, in which the costs of the cloud are correctly analyzed with a projection to 3 or 5 years with all the impact of maintaining an on-premise IT infrastructure compared to the current one.

Solutions are also made to prepare the team in the knowledge, accompaniment and preparation of the work teams. The objective is for them to get to know the core services of the cloud and also at the business level. This is how they will learn about a new way to determine and control the IT resource budget.

In addition to other stages within the program, such as Mobilize and Migrate, it is relevant to point out that AWS has, as part of the same program, economic incentives for the change from VMware to EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), which allow funding professional services for the migration and consumption of the production environment. All this makes the migration process easier and more achievable.

See you in the Cloud!

As part of its expertise in executing successful migrations, Itera is validated by Amazon Web Services (AWS). This level of partnership and competencies allows us to provide our customers with incentives, making a successful cloud migration strategy possible.

Amazon Web Services Generative AI: Is it safe to deploy Generative AI with AWS?

Let’s talk about security and Generative AI. What happens to security when we use generative artificial intelligence? This is a question that is constantly repeated in conversations with customers, especially when thinking about developing solutions with confidential information of companies, such as customer financial data, personal information or processes, for example.

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is partly responsible for this questioning. Those who have used it know that its benefits are achieved thanks to its nature: learning from open data and from the data of the users who use it daily.

This feature can be insecure, and as such, no company should build or share classified information with tools that don’t guarantee the privacy and security of their data.

Amazon Web Services Generative AI:

The AWS Cloud offers Generative AI services that enable users to securely develop solutions with diverse use cases, with a focus on protecting customer data. To answer the initial question, it’s important to understand the AWS security background.

What is Amazon Bedrock?

It is AWS’s core Generative AI service. Amazon Bedrock is a fully managed service that offers several foundational generative AI models built by different vendors, with a set of capabilities to build fully customizable AI applications privately and securely. This service allows us to develop intelligent solutions that respond according to the needs, data and settings of each company.

In addition, this product applies the shared responsibility model, in which AWS is responsible for protecting the infrastructure where applications run, while users are responsible for configuring security and related services.

It is important to note that:

  • Amazon Bedrock does not store or log requests or results.
  • Amazon Bedrock does not use user-provided instructions for training models or distribute them to third parties.

How does Generative AI work on AWS?

On AWS, generative AI models are provided by different vendors through a deployment account in each region, managed by the Amazon Bedrock team.

Providers do not have access to AWS accounts; the Amazon Bedrock team makes a copy of the inference and training software. As a result, suppliers do not have access to records or any customer information.

In short, the copy of the Generative AI model used only contains the trained software, not including the information with which it was trained. No additional information is generated for training by providers, as they do not have access to data or any other information outside of AWS.

When a generative AI solution is enabled with this service, one individual copy is generated in each AWS account, as well as one copy per region. This means that data is not stored in a common place; each customer has their own copy of Amazon Bedrock models.

In addition, AWS Generative AI encrypts information from sessions using an AWS-managed key, and all requests to the models’ API are made over a secure SSL connection.

You can even use AWS PrivateLink to create a private connection between your own VPC and Amazon Bedrock, without using an Internet access port.

Best Practices: Key Principle for Generative AI in your Company

Like any other Amazon Web Services service, you need to build an infrastructure with good security practices, such as:

  • Access control with MFA and the principle of least privilege.
  • Create a separate VPC with a subnet environment and port access control.
  • Adding services such as Security Hub and GuardDuty.
  • Monitoring with Amazon CloudWatch and Amazon EventBridge.

In other words, an environment must be built under the best practices of the Amazon Web Services security pillar, since everything that is developed must comply with these guidelines, regardless of whether the Generative AI models are built and deployed safely.

Therefore, with the help of a specialized partner, a solution can be built in a highly secure environment.

Facts about Security and Generative AI:

  • Only 24% of Generative AI projects are being secured due to executives not prioritizing security.
  • A new and challenging landscape requires companies to build foundations of governance, secure application development, data governance, and usage models.
  • 90% of the Generative AI requirements are considering specialized tools and partners.
  • Currently, the main risk of Generative AI lies in open source services and the indiscriminate use by collaborators of these tools, who upload information from companies without considering the operating logic.

All this in contrast to cases that are built with a service that must comply with regulations and standards, as is the case with Amazon Web Services.

5 Tips to Improve Your CloudCost Strategy

5 Tips to Improve Your Cloud Cost Strategy

When we talk about the cloud, we address aspects related to architectures, services, and migration strategies. Within all this, it is essential to have a clear cost strategy that leads to its optimization in a natural way.

Unlike an on-premise scheme, cloud services have one of their pricing models on demand. In other words, you pay only for what is used in each and every one of the services.

Whereas in an on-premise infrastructure, everything has to be provisioned from the start, paying upfront or at a fixed cost. On-premise infrastructure is fixed by nature, which does not allow for the implementation of a cost strategy that facilitates its optimization.

This is because you buy a complete server with specific capabilities that will remain for its entire useful life, whether it is current or not. For that reason, over time, on-premise infrastructure becomes obsolete.

Pillars for a Cloud Strategy

A cloud strategy must be based on the principles of control, visibility, and continuity. That is, we must understand that nothing is definitive other than change.

In that sense, we have in our hands the power to add, subtract, assemble and disassemble an architecture as the business needs. Hence, immense possibilities arise to innovate, support customer requests and manage data repositories with a large amount of information.

Considerations for a Cloud Cost Strategy

Being on demand, if the aforementioned principles are not followed, budgets can overflow without knowing how to control them or even overpay due to lack of adequate infrastructure.

That’s why, based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework, we give you five tips to improve your cloud cost strategy:

1. Separate and label

In AWS, tagging, that is, tagging resources to designate an owner, area, project or user, will allow you to identify how much is spent for that area, owner or project. So, start tagging your assets as soon as possible.

Separating your workloads or environments by AWS accounts allows you to further refine your cost strategy. For example, in development environments, tests, countries, etc. One of the security principles is the separation of accounts so as not to compromise information or data, while at the same time serving to determine costs.

2. Understand the performance of storage, database, and instance services

To establish your cost strategy that allows you to optimize them, there is nothing like knowing if the resources are oversized or unused. Performance should be monitored, since, if there is excess, it is best to move the applications to a smaller machine and thus reduce the cost. If they are unusable, we should not leave them there; in the AWS Cloud, a machine can be provisioned in a matter of hours.

In terms of storage, a very common mistake is to think that in the cloud it works the same as on an on-premise server. Volumes attached to the machines are provisioned considering a number of GB or terabytes to store documents, files, etc., which can impact costs since the price is permanent as long as a certain amount of gigabytes or terabytes is provisioned. Therefore, sizing what we need is relevant to define your cost strategy.

In case of having files, documents or backups, these must be located in the specialized storage service that is S3, the latter being incredibly economical and managed. This can be reviewed on a monthly or bi-monthly basis as part of your cost strategy, as what you have today is probably not what you need tomorrow.

3. Access control under the least privilege scheme

Although it may seem like a security recommendation, it is also a security strategy. In case of not having a Cloud Government and free access is given to work teams, for example, development, it is very common for them to configure services freely without considering the budget and then forget to turn them off.

This can lead to an increase in consumption without knowing why or for what purpose the resource was raised by the people who manage the infrastructure.

4. Innovative architectures

Let’s start thinking about autoscaling and microservices. Let’s leave behind the fact of having a huge machine or several instances on all the time as if it were an on-premise scheme.

In AWS, there is autoscaling, where machines are provisioned vertically as requests grow. This, in addition to ensuring that all requests can be received and met, allows scaling to only be carried out by hours, minutes and seconds. Once the requests decrease, the number of basic servers is returned.

On the serverless side, having applications that do not require machine provisioning is key as part of your cost strategy, because it can produce savings of up to 60%, since these services have one of the lowest prices in the cloud. To get to this point, ongoing training is necessary, as well as establishing a cloud path.

5. Have a short-, medium- and long-term strategy

With the help of a partner, a strategic plan is developed in the cloud, through which it begins gradually, knowing in detail the status of the applications, bases and licensing.

A progressive, step-by-step path is defined, as well as what is required for seasons, days, special events, etc. And on top of this, resources are turned on and off, or they are monitored to control their consumption as part of the cost strategy.

Let’s remember that the *Well Architected Review* dedicates an entire pillar to a cost strategy to achieve its optimization, since both AWS and Itera seek to make you pay less and less. In this way, with the same budget, you drive continuous innovation and achieve an impact differentiator for your business.

See you in the cloud!

There are other strategies for cost optimization, as it is a particularly robust topic that cloud users should be aware of. If you want to know more, contact us and we will gladly provide you with more information about these paths.

Are you a VMware customer? It Is Urgent that You Start Migration

Are you a VMware customer? It Is Urgent that You Start Migration

In 2023, with the acquisition of VMware by Broadcom, drastic changes were implemented in every way, both in the licensing scheme (no longer existing perpetual licenses) and in the way this technology is commercialized. So if you are a VMware customer, it is crucial to start migrating your loads to the cloud.

As a VMware customer, you must imperatively review the licensing and contract scheme you handle, raising the costs of maintaining servers in this regard.

The most relevant changes that affect you as a VMware customer are the following:

> New business models that change pricing schemes for VMware partners and customers.

> End of perpetual licenses.

> New subscription models for certain products with short-term and long-term subscriptions with usage-based licensing.

> Price increase of nearly 40%, impacting every VMware customer as a perpetual license user.

> Changes in renewal policies.

> Increased focus on the cloud, which makes virtualization solutions different.

Benefits of Migrating as a VMware Customer to AWS Native

In conversations with our customers in years past, the concern of migrating to Amazon Web Services (AWS) revolved around how to maintain the current architecture, dependencies, and connectivity. For this reason, we constantly heard from his own voice the latent fear of migrating to native services such as EC2 or RDS, preferring VMC schemes that were expensive and without taking advantage of the benefits of the cloud per se.

Migrating loads from a VMware client to native service schemes brings great benefits to businesses, such as:

> The loads can be optimized in costs and rightsizing, since being in an EC2 the instance is sought according to what is required, with the opportunity to change it as the behavior of the applications is understood.

> Licensing is no longer a problem, since in VMware Microsoft licensing, for example, must be purchased separately as in a regular physical server and updated, which at the time of quotation was not fully reflected and remained a hidden cost.

> In AWS, machines have the possibility of quoting with the operating system, both for servers and databases, always maintaining the most current and under an on-demand scheme, as well as the instances.

> When migrating to EC2, the path to modernization is much simpler than when trying to do it from a VMware client schema.

> Another problem is that VMware loads are often unupdated, over-provisioned, and without the needs that our end users now require. This represents a security risk, and the cost of over-provisioned machines impacts annual technology spending.

> Maintaining loads under the VMware client schema also delays the adoption of powerful databases such as self-managed ones, limiting low-cost multi-AZ schemes such as RDS on AWS.

Currently, companies need to stop thinking about rigid infrastructures that do not have scalability and that, when machines with better performance in terms of processing are required, the change is fast or even greater capacity is incorporated.

When you migrate as a VMware customer natively to AWS, it also allows you to design disruptive architectures, properly separating workloads, protecting data or core systems, isolating them from others and with a FinOps strategy. In this way, it is possible to properly identify the technology budgets invested by area.

About IT Governance

When we manage a cloud environment, the Government is facilitated. Whether with native AWS services that allow great control over strategy, access, policies, projects; or with the hassle-free incorporation of agility tools.

When migrating as a VMware customer to an AWS-native environment, the adoption of generative AI or Data Analytics is transparent and fast-paced. This is because everything is part of a whole with an incredible adaptability and services typical of the cloud.

Leveraging AWS Incentives Ensures a Migration with Excellence

When you make the decision to evaluate towards AWS it is not something you do alone. This cloud has free programs that allow us to analyze the infrastructure of our VMware customers.

Accompanied by professional services from Itera and AWS experts, these programs carry out the business analysis and design a successful migration plan with tests and validations before placing it in production.

And finally, AWS provides special financial benefits to those customers who come from a virtualized infrastructure on VMware. Favorably impacting each VMware customer in the business case to be evaluated

Based on our experience, we can say that:

> You have to lose the fear of migrating to AWS instances, because there is a pool of tools, incentives, and experts that accompany you throughout the process.

> We must evaluate each VMware customer as soon as possible due to the cost overflow with the arrival of Broadcom.

> Preparing our infrastructure to innovate must be a priority for the next 2 years.

> Having serverless, multi-AZ architectures is no longer a luxury, but a necessity to have a difference in the market.

> AWS-native schemes offer cost options with attractive savings versus what you pay as a VMware customer.

> The issue of licensing in native AWS schemes is no longer a problem and a risk for the business, specifically talking about Microsoft and Linux.

> The strategy of a cost-effective infrastructure is based on a Cloud Government in visibility, automation and scalability. Something that as a VMware customer you do not receive or have access to.

> Take advantage of the financial benefits that AWS offers now.

> By having Itera’s help to design the successful path, it ensures that it is a transparent migration.

See You in the Cloud!

Migrating as a VMware customer to native AWS services means breaking the paradigm of on-premise infrastructure to make way for an Innovation strategy that allows increasing the return on investment thanks to a better experience for customers, fast delivery capacity and a real and constant cost strategy.

Companies require a change in the way they operate, adapting and preparing for the speed that the world demands of us. Are you confident that your on-premise infrastructure will allow you to remain operationally efficient in the next 5 years?
